Two people have been airlifted to a hospital after an explosion destroyed a home in North Texas and damaged about a dozen others, officials said.

Two adults who were in the Waxahachie home were airlifted to a Dallas hospital after the 8 a.m. Monday explosion, city spokeswoman Amy Hollywood said. She had no details on their conditions.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, Hollywood said. However, Atmos Energy issued statements Monday stating that its crews were dispatched to the scene to perform leak surveys and determine if gas was involved.

Photos and video from the scene showed all that appeared intact in the tangled mound of debris was a garage with a car inside.

Refiners Fire, a church in nearby Ennis, Texas, that the two victims attend, said in a statement posted on its Facebook page that the woman has burns over 35 to 40 percent of her body and a possible shoulder fracture. Her brother has burns to his arm and face but his injuries were less severe, the post said.

Mosie Mallard, who lives a few doors down from the blast site, said he was in his house when it happened.

"I opened up my back door. Debris was falling. I could see from where I was standing at my back door that there was somebody sitting in the debris," Mallard told the Waxahachie Daily Light.

"I ran out, jumped over my fence, ran over and helped the guy up," he said.

The man asked where his sister was, Mallard said. Neighbors rounded up fire extinguishers to attack flames that were starting to take hold on the shattered timbers of the house. Mallard said that while he worked on extinguishing fires, other neighbors found and extracted the woman from the rubble of what appeared to be her kitchen.

Another neighbor, Marla Harris, said she had just walked into her house when the explosion happened.

"It was just like a big, loud shock — boom! I actually thought the garbage truck had run into my house. I came outside, and the neighbors on this corner were coming out. That is when we saw the wood and puff of smoke as we all started running down there," she told the Daily Light.

The home is in a subdivision that is still under development.

The American Red Cross said that in addition to the destroyed home and two with major damage, 10 others with minor damage were also evacuated. People living in the homes with minor damage can return once officials determine whether they are safe.
